If you’re 60 or older and live in Washoe County, you may be able to pick up free pet food every month, while supplies last. There’s no cost, and no income test is listed.
Washoe County Regional Animal Services runs the program with Washoe County Senior Services. The goal is simple: help older adults keep their pets when pet food gets too expensive.
Here’s when and where to go, plus other ways to get food if you can’t make it in person.
When and Where Is the Pet Food Giveaway?
Free pet food is distributed on the third Tuesday of every month from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., while supplies last.
The distribution takes place at:
Washoe County Senior Services
1155 E. Ninth St.
Reno, NV 89512
It’s a good idea to arrive early because supplies are limited. The type and amount of pet food available can change from month to month, depending on donations.
Who Qualifies?
The program is for Washoe County residents who are 60 or older. It’s completely free.
The county’s website doesn’t list an income requirement, so you don’t need to meet a published income limit to be considered.
However, the website doesn’t specify whether you need identification, proof of age, or other documents. It also doesn’t list a limit on how much food each household or pet can receive. You can ask the program about these details before visiting.
Most of the food comes from donations by the SPCA of Northern Nevada, with additional food and supplies from Petco and community members.
Because the program depends on donations, specific types of pet food aren’t guaranteed.
What If I Can’t Get There?
If you’re homebound and already receive meals through Washoe County Meals on Wheels, you may be able to have pet food delivered along with your meals.
The county provides pet food to Meals on Wheels for distribution to participating homebound seniors who have pets. If you’re enrolled, ask your Meals on Wheels provider about availability and whether any additional arrangements are needed.
Washoe County Senior Services also distributes pet food through two other locations:
- Cold Springs Family Resource Center
- Sun Valley Senior Center
The county doesn’t list specific pet food distribution hours or pickup instructions for these locations, so it’s best to check with them before making a trip.
You can find more information on the official Washoe County Senior Pet Food Distribution page.
