If you’re 55 or older and drive in Alaska, completing an approved accident-prevention course could help lower your car insurance costs.

This isn’t just a discount that some insurance companies choose to offer. Alaska law requires a qualifying rate reduction for certain drivers who meet the state’s requirements.

But turning 55 and taking a class isn’t enough by itself. Your driving record matters too, and you’ll need to request the discount at the right time.

Who Can Qualify for Alaska’s Mature Driver Discount?

Under Alaska law, the principal operator of the vehicle must be 55 years old or older.

You’ll also need to voluntarily complete a motor vehicle accident-prevention course that meets Alaska’s requirements.

There’s another important condition: when you request the discount, you generally must have had no chargeable accidents under your insurer’s underwriting guidelines and no moving motor vehicle citations during the previous three years.

The course also needs to be voluntary. If you completed an accident-prevention course because of a court order or sentence, that course doesn’t qualify you for this particular rate reduction.

There are no income requirements for the discount.

    How Much Could You Save?

Alaska doesn’t establish one statewide discount percentage.

Instead, state law requires an appropriate reduction in the premium for a qualifying personal motor vehicle liability insurance policy.

That means you shouldn’t assume you’ll automatically receive 5%, 10%, or another specific percentage just because you’ve seen that number advertised elsewhere.

Ask your insurance company how much its qualifying mature-driver reduction would save you.

How Long Does the Discount Last?

The rate reduction can apply for up to three years after you successfully complete an approved course.

To continue qualifying after that period, you’ll need to complete another qualifying course.

You’ll also need to continue meeting the other requirements.

Can You Lose the Discount Early?

    Yes.

Alaska law allows an insurer to cancel the rate reduction if the principal operator causes an accident or is convicted of a moving traffic violation during the policy period.

That’s why this isn’t simply an age-based discount. Your driving history is an important part of qualifying and remaining eligible.

When Do You Request the Discount?

The law says the qualifying principal operator requests the reduction at renewal.

You’ll need to provide evidence showing that you successfully completed a qualifying accident-prevention course during the previous three years.

Keep your course-completion documentation somewhere safe so you have it when it’s time to renew your policy.

You can also contact your insurer before taking a course to confirm what documentation it will require and how the reduction works with your particular policy.

How Do You Find an Approved Course?

Be careful here because not every mature-driver or defensive-driving course advertised online necessarily qualifies for Alaska’s insurance reduction.

The Alaska Division of Insurance directs consumers to the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles for information about driver education programs.

Before paying for a course, verify that it meets Alaska’s requirements for the mature-driver insurance reduction.

You can also review the Alaska Division of Insurance’s information about auto insurance discounts.

Does My Insurance Company Have to Offer the Discount?

Alaska law requires an appropriate rate reduction on qualifying personal motor vehicle liability policies when the statutory requirements are met.

However, Alaska doesn’t establish a single discount percentage that every insurer must use.

That’s why two qualifying drivers with different insurance companies may not necessarily receive the same savings.

If you believe you qualify, contact your insurer when your policy is approaching renewal and ask specifically about Alaska’s mature-driver accident-prevention course reduction.

    Is This Still Available?

Yes. Alaska continues to recognize this insurance reduction for qualifying drivers age 55 and older who successfully complete an approved accident-prevention course and meet the other requirements.

Just remember that being 55 or older doesn’t automatically qualify you. Your driving history, course completion, principal-operator status, and timing of your request all matter.

    Relief Recap

If you’re 55 or older in Alaska, completing an approved accident-prevention course could lower your car insurance costs for up to three years.

Alaska law requires an appropriate rate reduction for qualifying personal motor vehicle liability policies, but it doesn’t establish one statewide percentage.

Before enrolling, make sure the course qualifies. You’ll also want to confirm that your driving history meets the requirements and keep your completion documentation so you can request the reduction when your policy renews.
