If you can’t pay your Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) bill, you may have some anxiety about the future. Avoid shut off and save money by taking advantage of the information you can use to help with your bill.
UPPCO offers helpful payment options.
UPPCO has made it possible for their customers to make sure they are getting a bill that is the same or close to the same each month. Whether you are suffering through a harsh Michigan winter or you are enjoying the mild summer days, your UPPCO bill can be the same. Budget billing averages out your usage and divides it up over 12 months.
If you have a temporary hardship, UPPCO can work with you to help you extend your due date. When you let them know sooner that you’re not going to be able to pay your bill on time, they will be more likely to work with you. In addition, you can make sure you are protected from shut off during this time. The process for an extension is relatively simple and can take just a short phone call to UPPCO.
If you expect your hardship to last longer or if you have a huge bill that you know you’re not going to be able to pay in one shot, a payment arrangement may suit you better. The payment arrangement will divide up a large bill over a period of a year or longer. The program requires a down payment equal to a twelfth of your total past due amount. You must also not be in any other arrangement and you must not have defaulted on an arrangement in the past.

The program is subject to income eligibility guidelines and other factors. You will need to apply through UPPCO.
The Michigan Energy Assistance Program is for people who are low-income and expect to need help for the rest of the year. You will have to apply for the program through a community action program or through an assistance office. The benefit may not pay for all of the bills that you have through UPPCO. It can help you save money by paying for a portion of them.
The THAW fund of Michigan can help you with recurring monthly payments or can help with one-time assistance. Their goal is to make people self-sufficient, but they can provide you with the assistance you need on your bill if that is what will help you. You’ll have to do an application to determine eligibility. They will periodically look at your income and your household to determine if you will be eligible in the future.
Upgrade Your Home to Lower Your Bill for Free!
If your home is older or if you just have older appliances, you could be wasting money on your electric bill. With weatherization, you can get upgrades to your home and to the appliances in your home. The program will pay for these upgrades at no cost to you. Apply for the program where you apply for MEAP or other benefits. It has income eligibility requirements you’ll have to meet if you want to use the program.
To help make your home even more energy efficient, UPPCO offers rebates on various energy saving appliances. They can also help pay for energy efficient light bulbs you can use in your home. The rebates can range from just a few dollars for light bulbs you have purchased to hundreds of dollars for appliances you need in your home. They have many different products they will provide rebates for so make sure you look at their extensive list.
If you are having a medical emergency, you may be protected for up to 21 days. UPPCO offers the medical emergency protection program for those who are dealing with a certifiable medical emergency. The program requires you to fill out the medical emergency form and have it signed by your physician. Even though you will be protected from shut off for up to 21 days, you will still be responsible for any balance you accrued during that time.
The Salvation Army of Michigan may be able to help pay a part of your UPPCO bill. They are generally only able to pay a portion of the bill. If you have used their bill payment services in the past year, they are unable to help you with the payments. You’ll need to apply through the Salvation Army. In addition, you’ll need to make sure you bring in your shut-off notice and ID. The program has limited funds they can use once per year for customers. They will provide customers who qualify with a voucher that can be put directly onto the UPPCO bill.
UPPCO offers a senior program to help protect seniors from having their electric shut off. They use a combination of medical protection programs and winter shut off programs. They may also use state-funded programs to help senior customers pay their bills.
The winter protection program helps customers by only requiring them to pay 7% of their bill if it is extremely high during the winter months. While both seniors and low-income individuals will eventually be required to pay for the remaining bills, they will not have their electric shut off in the winter if they are on the program.
