If you or someone you love is struggling with everyday tasks, Florida has a program that may help.

The Community Care for the Elderly (CCE) program provides in-home support for eligible adults age 60 and older. Services may include personal care, housekeeping, meals, caregiver relief and even emergency home repairs.

Here’s what the program offers, who qualifies and how to get started.

What Does Community Care for the Elderly Provide?

Florida’s Community Care for the Elderly program helps older adults with physical or functional limitations continue living in their homes and communities.

Depending on your needs and what’s available locally, services may include:

    • Personal care: Help with bathing and other daily activities.
    • Homemaking: Assistance with housekeeping and household tasks.
    • Home-delivered meals: Food brought to eligible seniors who need nutritional support.
    • Adult day care: Supervised activities and care during the day.
    • Caregiver respite: Temporary relief for family members who provide ongoing care.
    • Emergency alert systems: Devices that help older adults request assistance during an emergency.
    • Emergency home repairs: Certain repairs needed to address urgent problems in the home.
    • Transportation: Help getting to appointments or accessing essential services.
    • Case management: Assistance coordinating care and community resources.

Not everyone receives every service. Your local agency will assess your needs and determine which types of assistance may be available.

Can CCE Help With Emergency Home Repairs?

Yes. Florida specifically includes emergency home repair among the services that may be provided through CCE.

However, this is not a general home improvement grant.

Repair assistance depends on your assessed needs, local program resources and whether the work falls within the services your agency can provide.

If a problem in your home is making it difficult or unsafe to live independently, ask your local CCE agency whether emergency repair assistance may be available.

    Who Qualifies for CCE?

According to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, you must:

    • Be 60 years old or older.
    • Live in Florida.
    • Have a functional impairment that affects your ability to manage everyday activities.

Functional impairment is determined through a comprehensive assessment.

For example, you may need help with bathing, moving around your home, preparing meals or other daily tasks.

Your eligibility and needs are reviewed annually.

CCE is a state-funded, non-Medicaid community care program. Your local agency can explain how it works alongside any other assistance you may already receive.

Family caregivers may also benefit from services such as respite care when an eligible older adult needs ongoing support.

    Is There a Waitlist?

    There may be.

CCE has limited resources, and qualifying for the program does not guarantee that services will begin immediately.

People with more urgent needs, particularly those at risk of nursing home placement, may receive higher priority.

Florida also gives special priority to older adults referred by Adult Protective Services who have been identified as victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation and need immediate services to prevent further harm.

That priority does not mean every referral automatically receives all requested services.

If you’re eligible but services aren’t immediately available, your local agency can explain the assessment and waiting list process.

    Does CCE Cost Anything?

CCE does not have a general income limit for eligibility.

However, some participants may have a co-payment based on their income and ability to pay.

The amount can depend on your financial circumstances and the services you receive.

Ask your local agency about any expected costs during your assessment so you know what to expect before services begin.

    How Do You Apply?

The best place to start is through Florida’s Elder Helpline or your local Area Agency on Aging.

Florida has 11 Area Agencies on Aging that help connect older adults with services in their communities.

    Here’s how to begin:

    1. Visit the Florida Aging and Disability Resource Centers directory to find the agency serving your county.
    2. Ask about the Community Care for the Elderly program.
    3. Explain what daily activities you or your family member need help with.
    4. Request an eligibility screening and ask how to arrange an assessment.
    5. Ask whether services are currently available or if there’s a waiting list.

You can also find information about the statewide Elder Helpline on the Florida Department of Elder Affairs website.

If you’re helping a parent or another older family member, you can contact the local agency to ask how to begin the process on their behalf.

    Relief Recap

Florida’s Community Care for the Elderly program may help residents age 60 and older who have difficulty managing daily activities remain in their homes.

Available services can include personal care, housekeeping, home-delivered meals, caregiver respite, emergency alert systems and emergency home repairs.

Eligibility depends on an assessment of your needs, and some participants may have a co-payment. Waiting lists are also possible, so assistance may not be available immediately.

If you or an older loved one needs help at home, start by contacting your local Area Agency on Aging and asking about CCE.

Even if you’re unsure whether you qualify, the agency can explain your options and help you understand the next steps.
