What Is the Essentials Fund?
The Essentials Fund is run by GoFundMe.org, the platform’s own 501(c)(3) charity. It provides one-time emergency cash grants as surprise donations to people already running GoFundMe fundraisers.
Who Is Eligible?
It appears the Essentials Fund is specifically designed for people who are experiencing an unexpected crisis without any emergency savings. It looks like they’re trying to help people who are struggling with critical expenses, like food, housing or utilities.
How To Apply?
This is the most important thing to understand: there is no application. GoFundMe.org doesn’t take direct requests for this fund.
Instead, the fund selects existing GoFundMe campaigns and drops a surprise donation onto them. You can’t request to be picked, and there’s no published criteria for how campaigns get chosen.
What Should You Do If You Need Help?
Since you can’t apply directly, the only way to have any chance of being noticed is to have an active GoFundMe fundraiser describing your situation honestly and clearly, covering a real need like rent, utilities, or basic necessities. Beyond that, it comes down to GoFundMe’s own selection process, which isn’t public.
Because of that uncertainty, we’d recommend not treating this as your main plan for getting help. Use it as a small possible bonus on top of a fundraiser you’re already running or considering, not as something to count on.
