If you’re an Ameren electric or gas customer in Illinois and you’re behind on your bill, in danger of getting disconnected, or already sitting in the dark, there’s a program worth looking into: Homefield Energy Aid.
This is a bill payment assistance program funded by donations and administered by the Dollar Energy Fund, a nonprofit that runs hardship programs for utilities across multiple states. It’s designed specifically to help people who’ve hit a genuine financial crisis and have already tried everything else.
Here’s what you need to know before you apply.
What Is Homefield Energy Aid?
It’s a bill payment assistance program for Ameren electric and gas customers in Illinois. If you qualify, the money goes directly toward your utility bill — you never handle the funds yourself. It’s meant to help people who are dealing with a real financial emergency, and it’s designed to be extra help on top of programs you might already be using, like LIHEAP.
Better yet? You don’t even need a disconnect notice in order to apply! This is one of the best things about this program. You can apply whether your service is:
- Past due
- At risk of being shut off, or
- Already shut off
A lot of people wait until they get a scary letter before looking for help. With this program, you don’t have to wait that long — and if your power or gas is already off, you can still apply to try to get it back on.
Who Is Eligible?
You’ll likely qualify if you can check off all of these:
- Are you an Ameren customer? This program only covers Ameren electric or gas accounts in Illinois. If you have a different utility company, this specific program won’t apply to you.
- Are you dealing with a real emergency? Dollar Energy Fund is looking for people who are in an acute financial crisis and have already tried other resources. Common qualifying situations include losing a job, experiencing an illness or injury, or having your utilities shut off (or threatened by shut-off).
- Is your account residential? It needs to be a single home or apartment where you live. “Cooking only” accounts, commercial accounts, industrial accounts, and apartments that share utility service with other units don’t qualify.
- Is the account in your name (or the name of an adult living in the home)? If the bill is in someone else’s name and they’ve moved out, that could be a problem when you apply.
- Does your income fall within the limit? This program uses 400% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines as its cutoff — which is a much higher limit than a lot of programs use, so more people qualify than you’d think.
You can also plug your numbers into Dollar Energy Fund’s own Income Calculator to check where you stand.
How Much Can You Get?
The most you can receive is $350. Your exact amount depends on your household’s specific situation — not everyone gets the full amount.
You can only get one grant per utility, per program year. The current program year runs from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026.
Just remember – this money can’t be used for security deposits or reconnection fees. It only applies to your actual utility bill.
If your service is off (or about to be) and $350 won’t be enough to fix that, your application will be denied. Ameren determines exactly how much is needed to restore or keep your service on. If the $350 max doesn’t cover that full amount, you’ll get a notice saying you need to pay the difference yourself before you can get help.
How Do You Apply?
This program has its own online application, so you don’t have to track down a local agency first. Just visit the Apply for Homefield Energy Aid link.
Funds are given out first come, first served, and they do run out. If you think you qualify, don’t wait — apply as soon as you can.

Hello, I want to say THANK YOU!! And God Bless! This program came through for me at the exact moment I needed help! My power was shut off at 8:02 after this program pledged the $350 to my account, and I was on the phone at 8:03 with the rest of the payment to get it back on! I couldn’t have gotten it restored without the assistance of this program and the help at the exact time I needed it was a blessing! I don’t remember applying for this program so I think it was miracle that happened, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the assistance! I recently lost my income and I live alone so it’s been rough! Thank you and I’m so grateful for this support! God bless all!
Natasha, we’re so glad you found this resource at exactly the right time and were able to get your power restored! Thank you for coming back to share your experience with us. We hope things get a little easier for you from here
