If you live in Texas and you need a new car, you need to know about OnRamp! This program provides donated vehicles for free to low income individuals and families who need them. They have several branches throughout Texas to help. Let’s talk about who is eligible and how you can apply.
What is OnRamp?
OnRamp is a nonprofit program that helps people connect with reliable transportation. They’ve given away over 240 cars, with a special focus on four-door sedans and SUVs that are not more than 10 years old and have less than 120,000 miles.
What Services Do They Provide?
In addition to giving away free cars to those who need them, OnRamp also provides other essential services including:
- Coaching and budget counseling
- Maintenance assistance
- Prayer support
- Uber cards and bus fares
They also try to connect clients with additional resources when possible.
Who is Eligible?
In order to be eligible for help from OnRamp, you must meet the following requirements:
- Live in one of their service areas (Brazos Valley, DFW, San Antonio, or Coastal Bend)
- Be nominated by a partner agency
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Have positive monthly income that exceeds your expenses
- Be able to afford liability and collision insurance
- Be able to afford gas
- Be willing to complete all the action steps assigned by OnRamp
It appears the required action steps are tailored to you during the interview phase.
How Do I Apply?
OnRamp uses a special nine-step process for all applicants. They are as follows:
- Connect with an advocate. This is important because you must be nominated by a religious, government, educational, charitable or healthcare organization that has known you for at least three months. They will have to fill out the nomination form on your behalf. Just make sure they’re on the right page for your location!
- Complete an application.
- Undergo an interview.
- Enter the program.
- Complete your steps. The steps appear to vary depending on what your unique situation is. Some of the steps listed on their website may include things like meeting with a budget counselor, opening a bank account, building a resume, getting auto insurance, or other things.
- Receive your vehicle. In addition to receiving the vehicle, you also get a full year of coaching, prayer support and maintenance assistance.
- Build your savings.
- Deepen your relationships.
- Accomplish your goals.
