Need Help Paying Your Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative Bill? We Found Help!

The Maine LIHEAP benefit provides residents a chance to reduce their electric bill. The benefit may pay for all or some of the bill to help offset the costs of heating your home during winters in Maine. You must apply for the program through your local benefits office. The benefit is applied directly to your Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative bill.

If you have applied for LIHEAP, your community action representative may have automatically applied for supplemental assistance. You can use it with other assistance programs. If you did not already apply, it may be able to help you with payments in addition to your LIHEAP benefit.

Downeast Community Partners may be able to help you with a utility bill payment. They work with those who are low income and very low income to provide them with the utility assistance they need. They may not always have funding available.

Knox County EMEC customers may be able to get help through the Interfaith Outreach. In addition to being a food pantry, they also have utility assistance available. If you are not in Knox County, you may be able to get a referral through Interfaith Outreach to a program in your county.

Avoid Shut-Off With These Resources

The Aroostook Band of Micmacs can help those who are in the Aroostook County area and are customers of EMEC. The program is for emergencies only and may only be available during certain times of the year. You will be required to show proof of impending shut-off if you are hoping to get help through this agency.

If you have a condition that requires you use oxygen, EMEC will do what they can to notify you of planned power outages. Once you apply and are approved for their oxygen program, you will be automatically added to the notify list. This can protect you from having your power turned off.

Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative Can Help You in Other Ways

As a part of a co-op, you will get the benefit of a Co-op Connections Card. The card can help you save on prescriptions and with retailers all around Maine. While the card may not be able to save you money on your electric bill, it can help you save in other areas. These savings can add up, making it easier for you to pay the bill.

The Draw 10 program can help you, but it is not a reliable way to help pay your bill. Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative draws ten numbers each month that will be able to receive a $100 credit on their account. They post the numbers on their website. If you are the first or second person to call in when you see your account number, you will get the credit put on your bill.

Weatherization can be a tremendous help if your home is not able to withstand the winter weather in Maine. If you do not have the proper insulation, your home isn’t sealed right or you don’t have appliances that are energy-efficient, you may be able to get help from the weatherization program. After doing an audit of your home, program administrators will determine what your home needs and what you are eligible for based on your income.

If you are in need of new energy-efficient appliances, check with Efficiency Maine to see if there are discounts available. In addition to discounts and rebates, Efficiency Maine also provides a low-interest efficiency loan program. Not everyone will qualify. You will need to pay the loan back.

Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative Payment Options Are Easy

The Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative does not have official rules on payment extensions or arrangements. They look at each situation on a case-by-case basis. If you contact the co-op, you may be able to get an extension or arrangement. While they cannot guarantee they will help you make arrangements, calling as soon as you know you won’t be able to pay your full bill can be helpful.

If your bills are generally higher during the frigid Maine winters, budget billing may be able to help you. While it will not reduce your cost for electric, it can spread the costs evenly throughout the year.
