There are South Dakota legal aid resources that might be able to provide help if you’re a low-income resident and you meet the organization’s requirements. Many of these organizations work with bar-certified attorneys and are able to provide help based on your civil case. These organizations work with people who are facing civil cases. If you’re facing a criminal case, you might be able to find help through one of the state’s public defenders.

You could qualify for South Dakota legal aid!

The Access to Justice program might be able to provide South Dakota legal aid for people who are low-income and struggling to get legal assistance. If you’re low-income and you meet the program requirements, you might be able to get help from this organization. You will need to be able to meet their income and other qualifications to get help.

South Dakota Law Help might be able to help you find an attorney who does pro bono work. Attorneys in South Dakota might be able to help you with your civil case. Depending on the case and if you meet their requirements, they could help answer questions, give you legal guidance and even represent you for the whole court case!

Legal Services Corporation of South Dakota might be able to provide resources to people who are struggling to find an attorney to represent them. You might be able to get help through the corporation if you meet their income guidelines. They also have other requirements you’ll need to meet to qualify for help through the program. Depending on availability, you might be able to find an attorney who can represent your whole case for free.

The South Dakota Housing Development Authority might have South Dakota legal aid available if you’re struggling with a housing issue. While the attorneys generally do not provide representation to people who are in need of assistance, they might be able to answer questions about your housing situation and other needs. Depending on the legal situation you’re in, you might qualify for help through the resources law students have to offer.

Get South Dakota legal aid through your county!

There are some counties that might offer South Dakota legal aid separately from the state legal aid. These organizations are different and could have different guidelines meaning you might be able to get help when you couldn’t with other organizations.

Eastern South Dakota

The East River Legal Services division might be able to help if you’re in Eastern South Dakota. The program is intended for people who are low-income and struggling with the legal options they have. Some people might think they could get legal representation through the ACLU, but this does not typically happen. Instead, the ACLU has resources to teach you about your rights and how to protect them. They can also show you how to get representation.
