You might also want to check out the conference center, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and the Church History Museum while you’re there.

You can check out the unique architecture and the bronze statues while you learn about how Utah’s culture has had such a big influence on the United States. International Peace Gardens are located outdoors and give you a chance to explore different plant life. The gardens were donated and continue to be taken care of by volunteers. The Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a great way to check out unique sculptures. All the rocks in the sculptures were taken from places throughout Utah. Admission is always free, but hours might be limited depending on the weather or the season.

The Wheeler Farm is a working farm and one of the free things to do in Salt Lake City that even the littlest of kids will enjoy. While some of the activities (like cow milking and hay rides) aren’t free, you can have a fun time interacting with the animals and the people who work on the farm without paying a dime.

If you’re visiting SLC in the summer, you might be suffering in the often-high and dry temps. The city has splash pads throughout that kids can enjoy and parents can cool off. Some favorites are the splash pad at The Gateway and the one at City Creek Center. Both are located close to parks, shopping and food so you can make a day of it!

The Utah Museum of Fine Art doesn’t usually have free admission, but you can get in for free on the first Wednesday and the third Saturday of the month. Make sure you get an enrichment pack from the front desk no matter when you go so your kids can get even more out of the fine arts learning experience.

Ever want to hear one of the world’s oldest and largest choirs practice? Thursday evenings, you can visit the Tabernacle Choir central to the Temple Square. They open up practice for free and you and your family can enjoy a free show during the time (it is practice, though, so don’t be alarmed if they sound a bit different than they do on your Tabernacle Choir CD).

Natural History Museum of Utah sometimes has free things to do in Salt Lake City. In addition to free events at the museum, they usually host one free day per season. Just beware, the museum can get really busy during the free days, but it’s worth it!

The Hogle Zoo has a variety of exhibits and learning opportunities for kids, adults and everyone in between. While the zoo admission is relatively inexpensive, you can also visit for free one to two days per season during their free day experiences!
