Molina Virtual Urgent Care is a fast, easy way to get medical assistance in the comfort of your own home. You don’t have to go anywhere to see a provider and, if you’re a Medicaid patient with Molina coverage, you can use this service free of charge!
In this article, we will review what Molina Virtual Urgent Care is, who is eligible and what you need to do in order to access it for free.
What is Molina Virtual Urgent Care?
Molina Virtual Urgent Care is an online telehealth solution offered by Molina Healthcare. This service allows you to connect with a doctor at any time, day or night. You don’t need an appointment and you can connect either online or over the phone.
Molina Healthcare offers managed healthcare services to low income individuals and families throughout the United States. The company was founded in 1980 by Dr. C. David Molina, and offers a variety of health care plans through Medicaid, Medicare and state health insurance exchanges. There are currently more than 3.3 million people insured through Molina across their 15 state service area.
Who is eligible to use Molina Virtual Urgent Care for free?
In order to use Molina Virtual Urgent Care for free, you will need to be a Medicaid patient with a Molina health care plan.
Molina Medicaid plans are currently available in the following states:
- New Mexico
- New York
- South Carolina
Many states use several insurance providers for Medicaid coverage so you need to make sure that your coverage comes through Molina. When I received Medicaid benefits, I was usually assigned Molina coverage. The one time that I was assigned to a different company, I called in and requested to be switched back to Molina. The person I spoke to was happy to make the change, and the coverage switch took effect at the end of the month.
You can tell which Medicaid-contracted health care provider is managing your coverage by looking at your insurance card. It should list your name and the company’s name and logo. If it isn’t Molina, you can request to switch as long as Molina is available in your state.
How does Molina Virtual Urgent Care work?
Molina Healthcare has contracted with Teladoc to provide the Molina Virtual Urgent Care service. That means that the urgent care system works basically the same way that Teladoc coverage does!
Basically, you’ll need to register on the app, log in and request to be seen by a provider. The wait times vary but are usually less than 10 minutes. The appointments can be handled over video or phone call. They’ll last about as long as a regular appointment. The provider can submit any prescriptions to your local pharmacy so that you can pick them up. It’s so easy!
I’ve actually used Teladoc myself through the custom Low Income Relief health package created by CareUltima. It took less than 5 minutes to reach a doctor and the appointment lasted about five minutes. Within an hour, I’d picked up an antibiotic prescription at my local pharmacy. It’s my favorite way to see a doctor because it is seriously so convenient.
What can Molina Virtual Urgent Care treat?
Obviously, there are some things that Virtual Care cannot treat. You should not use the virtual service if you’re going to need an X-ray, blood draw, or other in-person care. If it’s an emergency, you should always call 911 immediately!
However, if you’re experiencing a minor illness or an urgent (but minor) condition like a UTI, Virtual Care is an excellent alternative to traditional care.
Here’s a partial list of the things that Virtual Care can treat:
- Athlete’s Foot
- Back Pain
- Bladder infection
- Ear Pain
- Eye Issues
- Insect bites
- Pink Eye
- Sinus Symptoms
- Sore Throat
- Stomach Flu
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in adult women
- Yeast infection
This isn’t an exhaustive list. There are other conditions that Molina Virtual Urgent Care can treat, as well. This is just an example.
How much does it cost?
This service costs absolutely NOTHING for Molina Medicaid members in participating states. You’ll just need your Molina Member ID, which can be found on your ID card. If you’ve received an email from Molina, the number may be found there as well.
Although it appears that all Molina customers have access to this program, we were able to specifically confirm that the Virtual Urgent Care service is available to Medicaid clients in the following states:
If you don’t qualify for a Molina Medicaid plan and you want to use the Teledoc service, you can access it for a low monthly fee when you subscribe to the Low Income Relief health package from CareUltima!
